A Few More Images of Allenhurst

[Return to Allenhurst, P. 2]

The Allenhurst police station. Years ago, this used to be a pharmacy. The Allenhurst Pharmacy, and the one in the neighboring borough of Deal, received a number of famous patrons through the years: Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor, Jane Wyman, Jackie Cooper and former Miss America Bess Myerson. The list includes famous newspeople (Walter Cronkite), sports figures (Max and Buddy Bear of boxing fame) and one mobster that we know of (Max Zwillman, who hung himself in Deal). See "Celebrities Visited Shore Pharmacies" in The Asbury Park Press, Sept. 5, 1995, by Ben Schultz and Peter Packet.

Here is the pharmacy most people remember. A fire, in 1992, marked its demise
and that of the whole block of stores between Corlies and Allen Avenues.

An older postcard showing the Allenhurst beach and jetty.
Note shadow of the boardwalk railing.

The "New" Allenhurst Casino (built in the late 1930s) was designed
to look like a ship. The pool is on the other side.

The Really old Allenhurst Casino. This is where the foot of the pool is today.
